MissElle: I became interested in fashion… Gosh, it’s honestly difficult to remember, because now I’m just kind of obsessed with it. Well, I’ve been interested in “experimenting” with clothing since about the 7th grade, when polyester shiny shirts and plaid fitted pants were basically all I wore. Was it a good look? No, absolutely not. But it opened my little mental doors to the world outside “jeans and a t-shirt”. After that, I went through a gigantic cyber-punk/nerd phase that had me in JNCO jeans and lots of PVC with fire-engine-red hair (that I cut by my 15-year-old self at 3am one sleepless night – DO NOT RECOMMEND).
Anna: Can you describe your fashion/shopping expertise?
MissElle: It all comes down to this: I LOVE designer garb – trust me, I spend far too much time wasting away as I stare down the runway at the latestand Dior creations… Not just for the impeccable design – the standard of quality that these garments hold are just as valuable as the creative genius behind them. However… I’m no Trump heir, and thusly, I have to find high-quality pieces at anything but retail. I consider myself an expert, I think… Maybe I’ll slap that on my business cards: “Expert at skirting the retail system.”
Anna: I’m totally with you on that one! I am always lusting after designer shoes. Speaking of shoes…do you remember your first pair of heels?
MissElle: DO I? You better believe it. I’d been BEGGING and begging my father to allow me a pair of platform wedges (all the rage in the late 90’s, youngin’s!), but being as he was a single father surrounded by nothing but MEN in the family, I’m sure he had no idea why. One day he told me that he’d bought us tickets to see Riverdance (OH YEAH!), and I knew that was my opportunity to snipe a pair of wedges right off the shelf, using the “special occasion” as reasoning. He’s a logical guy, so he totally bought into my 12 year old cute pleas.
MissElle: Oh, lord… I hate to count because, as my rent notices arrive, I feel a pang of guilt (and oooh, do I hate guilt)… But I’d have to guess about 35 in total.
Anna: Who is your favorite shoe designer? Why?
MissElle: I haven’t had the exposure to many of the shoe designers I wish to, but at this moment, I’d have to select Via Spiga as my #1 go-to brand.
Anna: What shoe trends are you loving/hating this season?
MissElle: YES! Oh my gosh, I harbor an INTENSE hatred of a) Uggs or any shearling-esque boot that fits over sweatpants and is allowed on college campuses, b) these obscene “vintage” slouchy boots that have NO heel, half round/half pointed toe and are suede… and c) the “grandma-slash-pilgrim” boots I’m seeing that lace up to the most awkward spot on the ankle, making sure to cut off your leg-line at the smallest point so your stems look like turkey legs.
Anna: Me too! In fact, I wrote a post recently about how I loathe Uggs. What is your favorite shoe store(s)?
MissElle: Bah, sneakers are for she-males and basketball players (cornered you, Dennis Rodman!). I only excuse Converse , because they’re just as classic as black peep-toes. I like to slip a pair of flats into my purse if I have a day full of walking, but if my feet were made of rubber, you’d see me in 4+ inches 24/7.
Anna: Are you sure we’re not twins?? Haha
If you could design a new shoe, what would it look like? What would you call your collection?
MissElle: I think that my shoes would likely be very sleek and demure… but with many color options available. I love super chic shapes like a platform peep-toe or an oxford bootie, but the range of colors is always so blah. I suppose I’d call the line “Lidabet”, because that’s the way I used to pronounce my middle name as a child, and “shoes” might as well be my middle name – voila!
Anna: When did you start your blog, Broke&Beautiful, and why?
MissElle: I started it because I was stuck in corporate purgatory at the time, and my way of rebelling was to drink Dayquil when consulting clients and shop online all day at my desk. Yeah, not very responsible, but I started to really enjoy it, so I figured – hey, I’m good at this, why not? We’re almost a year old now… But I’m not sure what day, because I don’t throw birthday parties for pixels and megabytes.
MissElle: My FAVORITE pair? You’re killing me with these “favorite” and “counting” questions, you know. =) I’d say my favorite pair of shoes that I currently own would have to be… my completely untouched, unworn Gabrialla Rocha d’orsay pumps. They’re black satin with a pink leather “ribbon” that winds all around them seductively, then twists its way down the stem of the heel into a cheeky little bow. Meow! I love them, but can’t bring myself to wear them. Don’t ask, it’s a weird compulsion.
Anna: Besides blogging about fashion, what else do you enjoy?
MissElle: I’m a semi-professional photographer, so it’s safe to say that I enjoy that a bit… I also love cooking. I try my absolute best to make everything (except anything dairy) 100% from scratch – it’s challenging and excruciatingly cost effective, and everyone likes that. My favorite outdoor activity is people-watching, and I like to watch and read psychologically awkward stories and pretend that I’m the main character (but I can’t read fiction, I get too involved!). Next on the list would have to be breathing, eating, being in love… and sleeping sits at the absolute bottom of the list. =)
