Word of the Week: Vamp

How fitting that I pick a Word of the Week that brings to mind images of Dracula and blood-thirsty monsters, when Halloween’s just around the corner?

Fangs aside, a vamp, as it relates to a shoe, is the front part of a shoe upper that covers the toes and part of the foot.  In styles that don’t have a lot of coverage on the top of the foot, the part that covers the tops of the toes might also be called the vamp.

For simple shoes like flip flops and sandals, the upper may be nothing more than a few straps for holding the sole in place.  Closed footwear, on the other hand, will have a more complex upper. This part is often decorated or is made in a certain style to look attractive.
